On high-altitude expeditions, our gaze is usually fixed on the sky, searching for the summit. However, at our Laguna Verde base camp, one simply needs to look down to discover a fascinating world. The shore of this lagoon is a tapestry of whimsical textures and colors sculpted by the driest climate on the planet. Walking here is, quite literally, stepping onto a landscape that seems taken from another world.
Walking on Another Planet: Desert Textures
The terrain surrounding the lagoon is a visual and tactile spectacle. As you walk along the shore, your boots crunch on white, porous crusts formed by the intense evaporation of salt-rich water. Within a few steps, the ground abruptly shifts to smooth, polished surfaces hardened by the relentless Puna wind, showcasing copper, ochre, and reddish tones.

This mosaic is not static. In fact, wind and temperature changes constantly reshape these formations. Consequently, every acclimatization hike reveals new textures that reinforce the feeling of being on another planet.
The Pulse of the Earth: A Living Environment
This entire chromatic and structural richness has a clear explanation: we are in a basin of intense geothermal and volcanic activity. Minerals washed down from the heights combine with the thermal springs that surface in the area. Because of this, perfect conditions are created for this explosion of colors in the Andes.

Here, extreme aridity meets underground heat. This phenomenon leaves a fascinating landscape in plain sight. Observing these details is vital for the climber’s psychological preparation before facing the extreme wear of altitudes above 6,000 meters.
Beauty that Acclimatizes the Mind
Acclimatization is not only a physiological process; it is also mental. Spending days at Laguna Verde allows the mountaineer to tune into the raw rhythms of the mountain. Feeling the temperature contrasts and living within the vastness of the landscape is a fundamental part of the strategy prior to the high-altitude push.

The HME Seal: A Strategic Base Camp
At HME, we establish our base at Laguna Verde (4,340 m) because it is the perfect step in our strategy. We take advantage of this unique environment, such as the natural thermal pools. Therefore, we offer our athletes an unbeatable space for physical recovery and deep rest after high-altitude rotations.
